This course will introduce individuals with little or no prior experience to the fundamentals of officiating with an emphasis on football. We will explore how the game is structured, and how officials support the game through rules knowledge, communication, and game management.

Beyond rules, the course highlights the principles that guide effective officiating, such as professionalism, communication, composure, and preventative officiating. We will examine how officials interact with players and coaches, manage the game environment, and how to handle challenging situations.

This course is intended as a starting point for those interested in officiating. By the end of the program, participants will have a basic understanding of how football games are officiated and will be better prepared to continue their development through additional training and on-field experience with a local officials association 

Upon successful completion of this course:

  • Explain the basic structure and flow of a football game 
  • Explain key football rules and concepts
  • Explain basic game management principles
  • Identify roles and responsibilities of officiating positions
  • Recognize common game situations
  • Earn NFHS certificate for Interscholastic Officiating
  • Earn NFHS certificate for Officiating Football
  • Earn OSAA certificate for Principles of Officiating
